Maybe this space could also work as a "virtual water cooler." Thoughts?
Technology
Q: There could be an issue here when multiple people are trying to post at the same time to the same page. Stuff can get lost. Any fixes to that?
A: The problem will be solved when we'll upgrade the PmWiki at 1.0.x - and this will happen until July 20. (CB)
Q: How do we make sure that an author is listed on the changes? Frank's stuff is up there, but his name is not attached.
A: Each author should sign the revision by using the "Author" field (below the editing window); also, adding the name at the end of the posting will be helpful. (CB)
Q: We need to get the RSS feeds working on this thing.
A: They are working. Each page has a full text RSS feed - it can be found at the top of the page. (CB)

Conversation Tracking
For research purposes, I am tracking all of the conversations we have (email primarily right now) as we plan this project here. This is a little kludgy, so apologies. I am trying to figure out the best way to make this data available. Ideally, all commentary would happen in the wiki, but right now, its email.

July 6: I sent an email off to Toni Kistner of Network World's TeleWork? Beat today. She is a journalist I really respect, and I hope to get her feedback on our idea. The text of the email follows:
I have proposed to a group of roughly 30 PR people I am associated with worldwide, who are putting on the Global PR Blog Week next week (http://www.globalprblogweek.com), that we adopt an organization and conduct a fully transparent PR/marketing program. I've called this the Open Source PR Project. You can read all about it here on the wiki: ...

Everything!
About this page
This is a proposal for the first ever open source PR project. It is the brainchild of Elizabeth Albrycht, who is interested in gathering data and testing theories of the New PR.
Open Source Philosophy
Some interesting points to inspire us, from this essay by Azeem Azhar:
Yochai Benkler, a law professor at Yale University, has called this "commons-based peer production." ... Benkler calls this a third mode of production for the market, distinct from the company and the "spot market" (or, in employment terms, the freelancer). Open source shows that it is possible for part of the economy to function without companies but with many self-employed individuals contracting with each other.
Wikipedia has no controls. Anyone can visit the site and create or edit an entry. You might think this is a recipe for mayhem. In fact, it provides for an open

Proposal
I have a somewhat radical idea for one way we could use the New PR wiki after Global PR Blog Week. I’d like to propose the first ever Open Source PR project, where we invite a willing organization to conduct a totally open PR/marketing campaign with the help of the PR community at large.
Here’s how it would work
We invite interested organizations to post reasons why they would like to participate in such a project. We should have some guidelines, like:
* Will be announcing company, new product or service within 3-6 months
* I’d like to encourage an emerging tech company since that is where most of our collective expertise lies.
* Alternatively, this might be great for a non-profit or an association.
* The company shouldn’t be public, as there are too many SEC issues about this type of work, and I don’t think we want to deal with that at this ...

Our need is centered around the fleshing out and execution of a marketing plan. We have done a good portion of the marketing research, and have a general plan in mind. We will be rolling out an alpha version of a blogging offering within the next two weeks that is based on a number of open source toolsets. With 20,000 new blogs coming online every day, capturing a mere 1/10th of 1% of the emerging market will allow us to meet our cashflow goals. We have integrated tools in a way that will allow our blogging customers to have the utmost freedom in how they ...

5. What is the Marketing and/or PR Challenge You Wish to Be Addressed by the NewPR Community?
Getting the business side of things started is one of the things that comes naturally. Gathering community, getting early buyin, running the numbers, getting funding... None of that is a huge problem (well, funding can always be difficult, but I'm sure that's beyond the scope of this exercise). In fact, everything up until the 'product is ready' stage is easy for me.
It is the step between readying the product / company, and actually launching where I am weak. The expertise on the NewPR panel is ...

5. What is the Marketing and/or PR Challenge You Wish to Be Addressed by the NewPR Community?
Hello folks,
Not long ago my business plan for a provider of customized lifelong learning and career services (CLLCS) was circulated internally at Microsoft. Soon after, I received the following e-mail from Randy Hinrichs, Manager of the Learning Sciences and Technology Group at Microsoft Research:
"Frank, you are a good man. Have you thought about joining this team? Your only alternative, of course, is venture capital. But their usual models require getting rid of the 'originator' within the first eighteen months. With Netscape it took a little longer, but you get the idea."

Yochai Benkler: Coase's Penguin, or Linux and the Nature of the Firm (PDF - 79 pages) (other publications)
In this paper I explain that while free software is highly visible, it is in fact only one example of a much broader social-economic phenomenon. I suggest that we are seeing is the broad and deep emergence of a new, third mode of production in the digitally networked environment. I call this mode "commons-based peer-production," to distinguish it from the property- and contract-based models of firms and markets. Its central characteristic is that groups of individuals successfully collaborate on large-scale projects following a diverse cluster of motivational drives and social signals, rather than either market prices or managerial commands.
